Questions
Snowball or avalanche: which is better?
Avalanche (highest APR first) usually costs less interest. Snowball (smallest balance first) pays off your first debt sooner, which keeps many people going. The calculator shows both, so you can see the real difference for your numbers and pick the one you'll stick with.
Is this financial advice?
No. Dollar Math makes educational tools. Results are estimates that assume a fixed APR and on-time payments; your lender's numbers may differ slightly. For advice about your situation, talk to a qualified professional.
What happens to the numbers I type?
Nothing leaves your device. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. The spreadsheets live in your own Google Drive.
Does it work in Excel?
No. Both spreadsheets are made for Google Sheets, which is free with a Google account and also runs in the Google Sheets app on your phone. They use Google-only features, like checkboxes and in-cell progress bars.
My minimum payment is lower than the interest. What then?
Then that debt grows on minimum payments alone, and the calculator shows 30+ years. Paying anything extra each month fixes it. The calculator shows by how much.
